Stepping Up is a national initiative drawing attention to a growing crisis – the significant number of individuals with mental illness who are incarcerated every year across the United States. Today three times more people with serious mental illness are incarcerated than are receiving treatment in hospitals and almost three-fourths also have a substance use disorder.
NAMI Austin and Austin Travis County Integral Care are leading local Stepping Up efforts and invite you to a community forum to hear from experts on the intersection of incarceration and mental illness. Join us to learn from nationally recognized leader in psychiatric care and research, Dr. William Lawson. Renowned for his expertise in the care of incarcerated individuals, Dr. Lawson recently relocated to Austin to join the faculties of Huston-Tillotson University and the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Presenters will bring national, state, and local perspectives on the issue to support our community in taking action to strengthen local initiatives that are addressing the crisis locally.
